but i cant seem to get the root MC to stay with my red ball, it moves along with it, but it acts like one of the objects i placed on the map. any ideas

you must have inserted something unnecessary, try with just

onClipEvent (enterFrame) {
this._x = _root.hero._x;
this._y = _root.hero._y-30; (you may have to tweak the number a bit)
}

and then slowly expand from there, add the lines and experiment to see what they really meant.
